Black Sheep Wall

All I know for sure is that their music is tar-thick, and possibly the heaviest thing you can stick in your ear. They believe in nothing.

Also, their name is taken from a cheat code for Starcraft.

So they're nerds, as well as nihilists.

Enablers

I finally got to see these guys last last week, a mere six years after I first heard of them.

They did not disappoint.

The set-up is fairly simple; just two guitars, a drumkit and Pete Simonelli's gravelly, two-lighters-a-day spoken-word vocal. No samples, and little in the way of effects. Essentially, it's little more than doomy-laden beat poetry with rambling post-rock-esque backing music.

On record, the songs flow from darkness to light, fluctuating in intensity, never settling for too long except where the narrative demands it. Each note, each word, is perfectly placed and sounded; but not in awkward, precise or contrived manner. It all just flows, the mood of the music either perfectly aligned or perfectly juxtaposed with Simonelli's words, equal parts laconic drawl and righteous fury.

Seeing them live is like listening to the records turned up to 11.

Awesome.

Nedry

I'll admit, these guys are probably only the greatest band in the world ever this week because they are bathed in the alluring glow of all things shiny and new.

I caught them supporting the also very excellent 65daysofstatic a few days ago, and was quite taken with their ethereal trip-hoppy electronica. Glitchy beats, a few dub step moments, a hint of jazz guitar and some not-quite-Bjork vocals all woven together to make something that's honestly not awful at all. Though I must concede, now that I read it back to myself it sounds a bit like the aural equivalent of George's Marvellous Medicine.

Having only discovered Nedry some 52hrs ago, I can't claim to know much else about them. Apparently their moniker is inspired by a shared love of the film Jurassic Park (Nedry was the name of the useless fat guy)... that's about it.

Dethklok

Okay, so they are kind of a cartoon band.

The cartoon in question is Metalocalpyse, another fine [adult swim] number that both ridicules and celebrates all things metal in equal parts.

In the cartoon, Dethklok are a metal band so popular that they have become the world's twelfth largest economic power.

But dig this; there's a real life Dethklok too, fronted by the creator of Metalocalypse, Mr Brendan Small. And they're not shit!

But it's the cartoon I've been watching. It might be a bit puerile and childish; but fuck it, so am I.
